WHO WE ARE:

The Mount Hood Green Scene is an independent, non-profit group of community members whose aim is to act as a catalyst for the unincorporated villages of Mt. Hood, Oregon as we work toward a sustainable future.  Our community is a special place, with a unique geography, natural resources, demographics, ideals, and history.  What works for other areas may or may not work for us - we need to find our own path.

On May 15th 2011 we will be completing our merger with Portland Recycling Team (PRT). Portland Recycling Team has been a pioneer in non profit residential recycling since the early 1970's. PRT is a 501(c)(3) non profit educational corporation and any donations to the Mt Hood Green Scene will be tax deductable. We need people interested in helping to make a Sustainable culture and economy a reality in rural Oregon -Contact Us/Volunteer

OUR VISION:

Our community is a special place, with a unique geography, natural resources, demographics, ideals, and history.  What works for other areas may or may not work for us - we need to find our own path.  The Mt. Hood Green Scene is mindful of the need to protect the health and diversity of our woodlands, rivers, and wildlife that share these pristine surroundings.  We exist to educate and support the people of our community as we transition from foreign oil dependence to local resilience, energy security and sustainability.

HOW WE WORK:
We are working in collaboration with community members, businesses, non-profits, and local, state, and federal government to hold community events such as the "Recycling and Sustainability Fair", where we can learn how to lead a greener lifestyle, a "Prescription Drug Turn-In Event" that will prevent toxic drugs from leaching into our waterways, to future events, limited only by our imagination.  Our website will provide information on current topics as well as sustainability news and links to other websites.  We welcome volunteers, as well as suggestions and feedback.

WHAT DOES "SUSTAINABLE" MEAN?:

An accepted general definition of sustainability is “using, developing and protecting resources in a manner that enables people to meet current needs and provides that future generations can also meet future needs, from the joint perspective of environmental, economic and community objectives.”

Sustainability is a uniquely broad and long-term concept that addresses quality of life and efficiency concerns. It takes into account both local and global views, applying a time frame that considers costs and benefits over lifetimes rather than one- or two-year cycles.

OUR NAME:

Because the work we do now to help create a sustainable lifestyle will determine the kind of world our children will inherit, a contest was held at the Welches Elementary and Middle School.  The winning "Mt. Hood Green Scene" entry was submitted by 2nd grader Benny Cox (shown below).

This event was sponsored by the Sustainable Hoodland Network, the Villages at Mt. Hood, and the Clackamas County Office of Sustainability, and funded by a grant from the Portland Recycling Team.  The fair was held in tandem with the Friends of the Hoodland Library's Used Book Sale.

Participants included local community groups, businesses, non-profits, schools, the county, and the U.S. Forest Service for a day of:
